The Dollhouse Beach Room

The Dollhouse Beach Room

Welcome to the Beach Room! I created this room for Joss, Kanani and Kailey to share. Years ago I started creating rooms in my dollhouse for each of the Girls of the Year (GOTY). I had planned on creating them for all dolls that do not have “big ticket” sets. (Example: Lea has a large Rainforest Hut that I display her in therefore she doesn’t need a room and so on.) As the years have ticked on and more GOTY’s are released I have found that I no longer have the space to continuously add more rooms. I plan on making several rooms that will work with multiple GOTY’s. Also, I prefer the historical doll collections and would rather use my dollhouse space for their rooms over the GOTY’s, that’s just my personal preference.

When creating historical rooms, I like to focus on the details and try to be as historically accurate as I can. The new modern rooms I have been working on are more flexible, less detailed. For me they are a backdrop for photography and a great way to display my modern furniture. This room is on the small side at just 28″ wide. The base cabinet is a Pax closet frame from IKEA. The two rooms above this one are Z Yang’s Studio and The Little Bitty Nursery.

For my color palette I chose Joss’ surf board and a teal AG bed as my inspiration. Years ago I was able to purchase three of these beds at an AG pop-up outlet for only $16 each! The other two I spray painted and used in Emma’s Bedroom and Ella’s Bedroom. I have kept this one original and used the bedding that came with it. The “Beach Please” pillow was a door hanger that I removed the ribbon from and I absolutely love how it fits in the space. The wallpaper is wrapping paper that fit the color scheme perfectly. I used ModPodge to adhere it to the walls. Wrapping paper is one of my favorite choices as wallpaper because the size is usually large enough you won’t have seams. I chose navy for the paneling and trim. The nightstand/dresser were two unfinished craft boxes that I painted mustard and they actually hold a good amount. I have several of Joss’ outfits tucked inside. The decor on top of the dresser is mostly pieces from Joss’ collection. The light-up mermaid box I found at the dollar store and the color was perfect! The starfish I found in a box of off brand doll items and the shells I gathered from the beach on our Florida vacation. The potted flowers are from the dollar section at Target.

I added a couple of hooks to the wall to hang accessories from each of three dolls’ collections. They also help to tie in more of the colors on this side of the room. For art work I found a great picture of a VW van that reminded me of Joss’ and on the opposite wall I used a picture of colorful surfboards. I purposely did not add any art above the dresser because depending on the angle of my photoshoot, I wanted to be able to switch the surfboard a dresser.I used Joss’ beach towel as an accessory on her bed along with her phone and sunglasses. Overall the room is a light, fun space that is very different from most of my rooms and I think it will be a versatile addition for photoshoots and these beach lovin’ girls!

Your site is my favorite. I host American Girl events at the library and always share “your rooms” with the girls in attendance. I tell them to get creative when creating spaces for their dolls.

I’m Amy

Welcome to my blog. I love all things historical and American Girl. I find creativity in the fascinating way people of the past lived. I love to travel to historic places and hear their stories. American Girl dolls and books fed my passion for history as a child and I have never stopped loving or collecting them. I hope you get enjoyment out of my adventures, discover a recipe or are inspired to create a doll world. Thanks for stopping by!
