The Dollhouse Living Room

The Dollhouse Living Room

My modern home dollhouse is complete and it only took 6 years!😂 In 2018 I introduced you to the first modern doll room I created, Emma’s Bedroom and that room led to a 7 room modern dollhouse for my twins Emma and Ella. The final room is a small living room connected to the kitchen.

The space I call the modern dollhouse is two 93″ IKEA Pax stacked on their sides. I use the shelves that are purchased separately to act as the vertical walls and supports for the frame. Hubs cut doorways into the shelves to give the feeling that it is one continuous dollhouse. I decided to not add a doorway between the kitchen and the living room but instead have an open walkway. To achieve this hubs cut about 8 inches off of the support wall.

I wanted the living room to be soft, calming and blue. Blue is my favorite color and I wanted this room reflect my personal style, which was kind of difficult on a 1:3 scale. I found this heavy duty blue striped wrapping paper and decided it was the perfect wallpaper. I knew I wanted a fireplace (for Christmas décor obviously😊) but wasn’t sure if I should use a toy one or create one. (Our Generation makes a really cute stone fireplace.) A few years ago Target had black Halloween shelves in the dollar spot (photo at the end of the post) and I immediately saw a doll-sized fireplace hearth and may have bought multiple!😉 After painting it white, I lined the inside with brick scrapbook paper. I wasn’t sure if I should add logs to the hearth but ultimately decided on candles (something I have done in my own fireplace). I couldn’t find an appropriate sized candle holder so I made one and cut down birthday candles to place in it.

The only sofa I had was the hot pink Truly Me Comfy Couch. The pink didn’t go with the calm, muted theme so I purchased some linen fabric and covered it. I glued 4 wooden knobs to the corners of the sofa to act as feet (I don’t care how the original one sits on the floor). The two blue and white striped pillows are from the dollar store and worked wonderfully with the color scheme. The chair in the corner is Our Generation and originally was pink plastic. I painted it white and made 2 pillows out of scrap velvet fabric to accent it.

I found the window mirror at Target and really like how it reflects in the room. The tall plant in the corner is also from Target. The small plants and macrame wall holder are from Michael’s (they always have great doll sized plants).

For the wall art, I found 3 modern plant prints, sized them and hung them above the fireplace. The wood bowl is a salt pinch bowl and I added some mini dollar store orbs to it. I found the blue vase at Goodwill. All of the faux books I made by sizing copies of antique book covers to scale and gluing them to cardboard. The rug is an upholstery sample from Pier 1 when they were going out of business. I wanted a side table to sit next to the chair but couldn’t find anything I liked. I finally decided to just make something using unfinished wood pieces from the craft section of Hobby Lobby and it turned out better than I thought! I don’t think I could’ve found something to fit in the space more perfectly.

This room is different from other rooms I have created because it isn’t focused on my American Girl collection. The only American Girl item in the room is the covered sofa. I do enjoy crafting for dolls but most of the rooms I create are made to showcase my collection not craft projects. I usually craft extra pieces to fill a room in but I prefer the bulk of the room to be American Girl. (See Felicity’s Bedroom, Molly’s Bedroom, Kit’s Attic Bedroom and Courtney’s Totally Rad Bedroom.) This room is serving its purpose in completing my modern dollhouse and will be so fun for Instagram photoshoots, especially at Christmas. I would love it if AG would make some living room dollhouse furniture (that’s not pink😉) in the future. Overall I am happy with the room and love that it is complete…for now.😊Until next time, Happy Collecting friends!

This living room is superb, relaxing and harmonious. Bravo, once again 🙂
I also used this model of sofa, and I covered it in gray (see here: https://image.canalblog.com/4bzC7rmNsIOkhrB6l4f1sUbeUmo=/filters:no_upscale()/image%2F1371214%2F20240608%2Fob_a05bd0_img-3936-1.jpg ); these pink colors are hardly compatible with the realism that we are looking for in our decors!
    Have a nice day 🙂

Just beautiful! You’ve given me lots of ideas as we rebuild our dollhouse. I love the idea of recovering the Truly Me couch. 💚

I’m Amy

Welcome to my blog. I love all things historical and American Girl. I find creativity in the fascinating way people of the past lived. I love to travel to historic places and hear their stories. American Girl dolls and books fed my passion for history as a child and I have never stopped loving or collecting them. I hope you get enjoyment out of my adventures, discover a recipe or are inspired to create a doll world. Thanks for stopping by!
